Bridge across Troubled Waters?

Work is due to start imminently on a new pedestrian and cycle bridge that will cross the mouth of the Nervia, much as the Passarella Squarciafichi crosses the Roya. The new bridge will also carry a cycle track and will join together projects on both sides of the Nervia, with the eventual aim of providing a route all the way up to Dolceacqua.

Talks have been going on since 2009, with little progress made until recently, but the Mayors of Ventimiglia and Camporosso, Enrico Ioculano and Davide Gibelli, have worked hard together to bring the project to fruition after years of rejection by previous Administrations. The cost is expected to approach 5 million euros. Some 30 organisations have been involved and the work is expected to complete in the summer of 2017.

On the Ventimiglia side a new cycle path will run along the sea front. The new bridge will then connect to Camporosso Mare, where there is already a small natural reserve. From there, pedestrian and cycle access will continue along the sea front, while inland, to the north of the Via Aurelia, the existing path will be improved and extended.
